Mentors Are Invaluable
We have mentors that guide us in our life and we should seek similar mentorships that help us in our business as well. A business mentor could simply be someone that you know is successful in business and is willing to share what they have learned. Once you’ve found a potential mentor, how do you ask them to be your mentor?
In celebration of Communications Concepts, Inc. 40 years of being business, CCI’s President and Founder, Jim Lewis, is sharing 40 tips that he has learned throughout the years about how to survive and prosper in business.
According to Forbes Magazine, there are 4 tips to help you prepare before you ask.
1. Clarify what you want.
What are your specific expectations and what role do you want the mentor to play in your career?
2. Think outside your cubicle and don’t restrict yourself.
Mentors can be found in a variety of places, so look outside your current workplace.
3. Set up a meeting.
Ask to meet and discuss exploring a possible mentoring relationship.
4. Be clear with your mentor.
Be clear on the time requirements and availability of your mentor, set up a regular meeting schedule.
Your mentor does not have to be someone you know personally. If there is someone out there that has been highly successful doing what you do, or want to do, find out more about them. See if they have a personal or company website. Research and read everything you can about how they became successful, and then figure out how to apply these same ideas and principles to your business.
Even today’s most successful people had mentors. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff found his mentor in Oracle co-founder and chairman, Larry Ellison. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella had Bill Gates as his mentor to teach him the ins and outs of the CEO role.
