In this video, Jim tells us about target marketing. One approach to marketing is called Shot Gun Marketing. It’s basically blasting out your materials to as many people as possible. Jim says, based on his experience in small business that may be too expensive. Most small businesses have to use target marketing.

First, you have to define your service or product. Then, you need to define how and who would use your product or service.

A small business such as NightLight Pediatrics, http://www.nightlightpediatrics.com, is an afterhour’s urgent care office for children. So their target market is parents with children who will at some point need a doctor when the office is not open.

Let’s look at a larger company like Apple. According to research-methodology.net, a common set of characteristics shared by the Apple target customer segment includes appreciating design, quality and performance of technology products and services over their prices.

Once you have your target market Jim suggests finding the best medium to reach them which may range from phone calls to e-mails, to changing your website, to social media or more. The end result of target marketing will mean you are only spending money to reach the customers you want.
